Is Octa Legit and Safe? Regulation and Fund Safety Checked

By BrokaBoy Research Team · Reviewed 14 October 2026 · Updated 14 October 2026 · 6 min read

Octa (formerly OctaFX) is a real broker group operating since 2011. Its Cyprus company is CySEC-licensed, but most clients outside Europe are served by offshore entities in Comoros, Mauritius or Saint Lucia with far weaker protection. Regulators in the Philippines (SEC), Malaysia (BNM) and India (RBI/ED) have publicly flagged OctaFX as unauthorised in their countries.

Key takeaways

  • Octa Markets Cyprus Ltd holds CySEC licence 372/18; EU clients get ESMA protections
  • Most non-EU clients sign with offshore Octa companies that have no compensation scheme
  • Philippines SEC advisory (Sept 2023) and NTC website block (March 2024)
  • BNM added OctaFX to its Financial Consumer Alert list on 29 August 2022
  • Check the company named in your client agreement, not the marketing

Short answer

Octa (called OctaFX until September 2023) is a real broker group that has operated since 2011. One of its companies, Octa Markets Cyprus Ltd, holds a CySEC licence. That does not make every Octa account equally safe. Most traders outside Europe sign up through the global site, octabroker.com, and are served by offshore entities with far lighter oversight.

Several national regulators have also named OctaFX in public warnings. The Philippines SEC issued an advisory in 2023, and the Philippines later blocked the website. Malaysia's central bank put OctaFX on its Financial Consumer Alert list in 2022. India's Reserve Bank listed it as unauthorised, and India's Enforcement Directorate attached assets in a money-laundering probe. If you live in one of these countries, read the warnings section before you deposit.

Which Octa company would hold your account?

Octa published its group structure in October 2025, and the MetaTrader 5 broker directory lists the same companies. We could not reach the CySEC or FSCA registers with our tools, so check the numbers yourself using the links in Sources.

The company that matters is the one named in your client agreement and on your statements. If your agreement names the Comoros or Saint Lucia company, CySEC's rules do not protect you, even though Octa's marketing mentions a CySEC licence.

Regulator warnings you should know about

These are official actions, not forum complaints. Each one is about whether Octa may offer services in that country. None of them is a court finding that Octa stole client money.

Philippines: SEC advisory and website block

On 28 September 2023 the Philippines Securities and Exchange Commission issued an advisory against OCTAFX/OCTA Trading. It said the platform was not registered as a corporation in the Philippines and was not authorised to sell or offer securities to the public there. It also warned that people who promote or recruit for it, including influencers, could face criminal liability under the Securities Regulation Code. In March 2024 the National Telecommunications Commission, acting on the SEC's request, ordered internet providers to block the OctaFX website.

Malaysia: BNM Financial Consumer Alert list

On 29 August 2022 Bank Negara Malaysia added OctaFX to its Financial Consumer Alert list. The list covers firms that are not authorised or approved under the laws BNM administers. Malaysian media also reported that OctaFX was already on the Securities Commission Malaysia's Investor Alert List for dealing in derivatives without a licence. We could not open that SC entry ourselves, so search the SC's list directly.

India: RBI alert list and ED attachment

India allows residents to trade forex only in permitted rupee pairs through authorised Indian channels. According to India's Enforcement Directorate (ED), OctaFX websites and apps were on the RBI's alert list of unauthorised platforms dated 10 February 2023. On 19 April 2023 the ED provisionally attached about Rs 34.75 crore of assets linked to OctaFx India Pvt Ltd under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The ED's press release sets out serious allegations, and it opened the case on a Pune Police FIR. These are allegations from an ongoing probe, not court findings.

What this means in practice: in these three countries, opening an Octa account means using a platform your own regulators have flagged. If something goes wrong, the local regulator will not help you recover funds, and payments into the platform may be illegal for you. We don't recommend it. Protection compared: EU entity vs global site

ProtectionOcta Markets Cyprus (CySEC)Global entities (octabroker.com)

Negative balance protectionRequired by EU rulesStated on Octa's website

The high leverage and bonus on the global site are not perks the EU entity chooses to withhold. EU rules ban them for retail clients, because both increase how fast a small account can be lost.

How we would check Octa before depositing

  1. Find your entity. Start the sign-up, then read the client agreement and note the company name.
  2. Look up that exact company on the regulator's own website, not on a review site. Use the CySEC register for the Cyprus company and the FSCA's FSP search for 51913. For Mauritius, use the FSC's licensee search.
  3. Check your own country's warning list. That means the SEC Philippines advisories, BNM's alert list, the RBI alert list, or the equivalent where you live. Our guide on how to verify broker regulation lists where to look.
  4. Confirm the website domain. Octa's November 2024 fraud notice warns about cloned sites, fake "IB managers" and WhatsApp or Telegram groups using its name. Octa says it runs no WhatsApp groups and that you should only pay through your profile on the official site or the official apps.
  5. Test a withdrawal early. Deposit a small amount, make a few trades, and withdraw. Octa says it processes withdrawals Monday to Friday, 06:00 to 22:00 EET. See our Octa withdrawal guide.

Scam risk: Octa itself vs people using its name

Most complaints we see about "Octa scams" fall into two groups. The first is regulatory: the broker is flagged in countries where it lacks a local licence. The second is impersonation. Strangers message you, promise guaranteed returns, and ask you to send money to a personal account or "deposit through an agent". Octa's own fraud notice tells clients to distrust unsolicited offers of guaranteed profits or of someone running their account for them, and says trading results depend on the trader. Treat any such offer as fraud. If you have already lost money that way, be wary of "recovery" services as well. Our guides to forex scams and recovery scams explain the patterns.

Our verdict

  • EU resident on octaeu.com (CySEC): Octa is a regulated EU broker with standard ESMA protections. That is reasonable for a small, cost-conscious account, provided you accept 1:30 leverage and the MT5-only setup.
  • Resident of the Philippines, Malaysia or India: your regulators have warned against OctaFX. We would not open an account. Choose a firm authorised in your country instead.
  • Elsewhere (much of Africa, Latin America, parts of Asia): you will most likely be served by an offshore company. Octa is long-running and its funding works for many traders, but you are relying on Octa's own policies more than on a regulator. Keep balances modest, never keep more than you could afford to lose with the broker, and withdraw profits regularly.

If you still want to open an account where it is permitted, our minimum deposit guide covers the starting costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is Octa regulated?

Partly. Octa Markets Cyprus Ltd is authorised by CySEC under licence 372/18 and serves EU clients. Other group companies hold offshore licences from MISA in Comoros and the FSC in Mauritius, and a South African intermediary holds FSCA FSP 51913. Most clients of the global octabroker.com site are not covered by CySEC rules, so check which company your agreement names.

Is Octa banned in the Philippines?

The Philippines SEC said in a September 2023 advisory that OCTAFX/OCTA Trading is not authorised to sell or offer securities to the public in the Philippines. In March 2024 the National Telecommunications Commission ordered internet providers to block the OctaFX website at the SEC's request. Promoters and recruiters were also warned of possible criminal liability.

Is OctaFX legal in Malaysia?

Bank Negara Malaysia added OctaFX to its Financial Consumer Alert list on 29 August 2022. The list names firms that are not authorised or approved under the laws BNM administers. Malaysian media also reported a Securities Commission investor alert for unlicensed derivatives dealing. Malaysian residents should treat Octa as unauthorised locally.

Is Octa a scam?

Octa is a real, long-running broker that pays withdrawals for many clients, so it is not a scam in the sense of a fake website. However, several regulators have warned that it operates without local authorisation, and scammers often impersonate Octa through WhatsApp or Telegram groups and fake account managers. Only pay through your official client profile.

Is my money safe with Octa?

It depends on the entity. EU clients of the CySEC company may be covered by the Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund up to EUR 20,000. Clients of the offshore companies rely on Octa's own policies, such as its stated negative balance protection, with no compensation scheme. Keep balances modest and withdraw profits regularly.

Why did OctaFX change its name to Octa?

Octa says it dropped "FX" from its name in September 2023 to reflect a wider range of instruments beyond currencies, such as stocks, indices and crypto CFDs. The companies and licences did not change because of the rebrand. Regulator warnings issued under the OctaFX name still refer to the same business.
