Maximum leverage depends on the XM company you're with
XM advertises leverage "up to 1000:1" on its global site, which is run by XM Global Limited (FSC Belize). That ceiling is not available to everyone. The XM entity your country assigns you to sets the cap, and within that cap the instrument sets a second limit.

Under the EU limits the full ESMA ladder applies: 1:30 for major currency pairs, 1:20 for non-major pairs, gold and major indices, 1:10 for other commodities and non-major indices, 1:5 for individual shares and 1:2 for crypto. Professional clients can get more, but you have to qualify on experience and portfolio size.
"Stable leverage": what XM promises
Many offshore brokers use equity-tiered leverage: the bigger your balance, the lower your maximum. Many also cut leverage around news events. XM's global site says it does neither. It says leverage stays at up to 1000:1 through events like NFP, so margin requirements don't suddenly rise and trigger a stop-out. That is a real advantage for anyone holding positions over news. It also means nothing automatically reduces your exposure when volatility jumps, so you have to manage that yourself.
We found no equity tiers on XM's global pages (October 2026).
What leverage changes in money: gold worked example
Leverage doesn't change profit or loss per pip. It changes how much margin a position needs, and so how large a position your account can hold. Gold at an illustrative $4,500/oz (the level XM's own leverage example uses), with one lot = 100 oz (check XM's symbol specification in MT5, as contract sizes can differ):
Notional value of 1 lot: 100 × $4,500 = $450,000

1:200

1:20 (EU retail)
$22,500
$2,250
The 1:1000 row matches XM's stable-leverage page, which shows $450 margin for one lot of gold. The danger shows up in the stop-out calculation. Take a $200 account at 1:1000 holding 0.05 lots of gold:
Margin used: 0.05 × 100 × $4,500 ÷ 1000 = $22.50
Each $1 move in gold = 5 oz × $1 = $5 profit or loss
XM's client agreement sets stop-out at 20% margin level, so positions start closing when equity falls to about $4.50
Loss needed to get there: $200 − $4.50 = $195.50, which is a move of about $39 against you
A $39 move in gold can happen within a single session. High leverage let the trade open with $22.50 of margin. It didn't stop the position from losing almost the whole account. Under EU rules that same 0.05-lot trade needs $1,125 of margin, so a $200 account simply couldn't open it. That is the protection those rules are designed to give.
You enter all prices and exchange rates yourself; nothing is fetched live. Results are estimates and exclude broker-specific charges.
Margin call and stop-out levels
XM Global's client agreement defines:
Margin call: 50% margin level. You get a warning and can't open new positions.
Stop-out: 20% margin level. The platform starts closing positions, least profitable first.
Margin level = equity ÷ used margin × 100. In the example above, margin level starts at 200 ÷ 22.50 × 100 ≈ 889%. That looks very comfortable, but it falls quickly once the trade moves against you.
EU retail accounts are closed out under ESMA's 50% rule instead.
How to change leverage on XM
XM says you can change leverage yourself "with just 3 clicks":
Log in to the Members Area (not the MT4/MT5 terminal).
Open your accounts list, find the trading account and choose the leverage option.
Select the new ratio and confirm.
The change applies to that account only. Lowering leverage with positions open increases the margin they need, which can push your margin level toward stop-out, so do it with no positions open where you can. EU accounts can't go above the regulatory cap whatever you select.
What leverage should you actually use?
A better approach is to set leverage by risk per trade. Decide the money you'll lose if your stop is hit (1% of the account is common). Then size the position with our position size calculator. If the trade still needs more than about 1:30 effective leverage, the position is too big for the account. A setting of 1:100–1:200 is enough for almost every retail strategy that sizes this way.
Common leverage mistakes at XM
Assuming 1:1000 applies to every symbol. Indices, energies, crypto and shares carry lower caps even on XM Global. Check the margin requirement in the symbol specification.
Reading leverage as a sign of quality. High leverage is a regulatory difference between entities, not a feature of a better broker.
Changing leverage with positions open. That changes the margin they need straight away.
Using the bonus as margin. Bonus credit lets you open bigger trades, but losses come from your own money first.
What we'd do
Choose 1:100 or less on XM Global even though 1:1000 is available. Check that the XM entity you're joining gives you the protections you'd expect. Leverage is the setting most connected to blown accounts, so read our leverage limits by country guide before raising it. The XM review and XM minimum deposit pages cover the rest of the account set-up.
CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Most retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. Consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money. Full risk disclosure.
Frequently asked questions
What is XM's maximum leverage?
XM's global entity, XM Global Limited, advertises leverage up to 1:1000. Lower caps apply to indices, crypto, energies and shares, and the Shares account is unleveraged. Clients of XM's EU entity are limited to 1:30 on major pairs under ESMA rules, with lower limits for other assets.
What leverage does XM give on gold?
On XM Global, XM's stable-leverage page shows gold at up to 1:1000, with one lot needing about $450 of margin at an indicative $4,500 price. Under XM's EU entity, retail gold leverage is capped at 1:20, so the same lot would need $22,500. That is why EU accounts can hold far smaller gold positions for the same deposit.
How do I change leverage on XM?
Log in to the Members Area, find the trading account in your accounts list, choose the leverage option, select the new ratio and confirm. XM says this takes about three clicks. Lowering leverage with positions open increases their margin requirement, so change it with no open trades if possible.
What is XM's stop-out level?
XM Global's client agreement sets margin call at 50% margin level and stop-out at 20%. At stop-out, positions are closed starting with the least profitable until margin level recovers. EU retail accounts follow ESMA's 50% margin close-out rule instead, which closes positions earlier and leaves more of the account intact.
Does XM reduce leverage during news?
XM's global site says its leverage stays up to 1000:1 during high-impact events such as NFP, unlike brokers that cut leverage before news. That avoids sudden margin increases but also means nothing automatically reduces your exposure, so position sizing is your responsibility.
