XM Minimum Deposit by Account Type and Payment Method

By BrokaBoy Research Team · Reviewed 14 October 2026 · Updated 14 October 2026 · 5 min read

XM's minimum deposit on its global site is $5 for the Standard and Ultra Low accounts and $10,000 for the Shares account. $5 opens an account, but a balance of roughly $100–$300 is needed to trade 0.01 lots with a sensible stop and 1% risk.

Key takeaways

  • $5 minimum on Standard and Ultra Low; $10,000 on Shares (XM Global)
  • $5 opens an account but doesn't allow 1%-risk trading
  • $100–$300 is a realistic starting balance for micro lots
  • Avoid wires under $200; XM doesn't cover their fees
  • An inactivity fee (reported $10/month after 90 days) can empty idle accounts

XM minimum deposit at a glance

XM's global site (XM Global Limited, FSC Belize) lists a $5 minimum deposit for both the Standard and Ultra Low accounts, and $10,000 for the Shares account (checked October 2026). XM quotes these figures in USD and shows the equivalent if you fund in another currency. Two other things can raise the amount you actually need: the floor of the payment method you choose, and the size of the smallest trade you plan to place.

AccountXM's stated minimumRealistic starting amount for trading*
Standard$5$100–$300
Ultra Low$5$100–$300
Shares$10,000$10,000

*Our view, explained below. XM sets the first column; the second shows what lets you trade with sensible risk.

Why $5 opens an account but won't support much trading

Position size is the limit, not margin. On EUR/USD, the smallest standard trade is usually 0.01 lots (1,000 units of the base currency, a micro lot), worth about $0.10 per pip. See our lot size glossary entry if those units are new.

At $5:

  • Margin for 0.01 lot EUR/USD at 1.10 with 1:1000 leverage = 1,000 × 1.10 ÷ 1000 = $1.10. You can open the trade.
  • But a 1% risk rule allows only $0.05 of loss. At $0.10 per pip that is a 0.5-pip stop, which is less than the spread. There's no workable stop distance at this balance.
  • With a realistic 20-pip stop, one trade risks $2, which is 40% of the account.

At $100:

  • 1% risk = $1. At 0.01 lots that allows a 10-pip stop. That is tight, but it works for intraday trading on majors.

At $500:

  • 1% risk = $5. With a 25-pip stop: 5 ÷ (25 × $0.10) = 0.02 lots. You now have room to size positions properly.

So $5 works for testing deposits and withdrawals, or for trying live execution with one tiny trade. A balance of a few hundred dollars is what lets you follow a risk plan. Our position size calculator does this calculation for any pair.

Minimum deposit in your currency

XM displays minimums in USD and says the equivalent applies if you deposit in another currency. Exchange rates change, so the local figure moves too. As a guide, at illustrative rates of 18.20 ZAR, 1,550 NGN, 130 KES and 83 INR per US dollar:

AccountUSDZARNGNKESINR
Standard / Ultra Low$5≈ R91≈ ₦7,750≈ KSh 650≈ ₹415
Shares$10,000≈ R182,000≈ ₦15.5m≈ KSh 1.3m≈ ₹830,000

Your bank's or wallet's own conversion rate will usually be slightly worse than these mid-market style figures, so leave a small buffer.

Does the payment method change the minimum?

Yes, in practice. XM's $5 is the account floor, but the method you pay with can set a higher one:

  • Cards and e-wallets generally accept small amounts, and XM says it doesn't charge for them.
  • International bank wire: XM doesn't cover wire fees under $200, and your bank and intermediary banks often charge $15–$40 per transfer. A $50 wire could lose most of its value in fees, so wiring less than $200 rarely makes sense.
  • Local methods (mobile money, local bank gateways) have their own floors that XM shows in the Members Area. They differ by country.

Details are on our XM deposit methods page.

Do other XM entities have different minimums?

The $5 figure is what xm.com shows for XM Global. XM's EU (CySEC) and DFSA companies publish their own account pages, and third-party reviews list different line-ups for them (for example a commission-based Zero account under CySEC). We could not open those regional pages to confirm their minimums. Check the registration form for your country. It shows the minimum that applies to you before you deposit.

What about the bonus?

On the global entity, XM's deposit bonus is linked to the Standard account and varies by region. The credit can't be withdrawn. It is not a reason to deposit more than you planned, and it is not offered under XM's EU entity. See our XM bonus guide.

Getting your deposit back out

A small first deposit followed by a test withdrawal is a cheap way to check a broker. Keep in mind:

  • Your account must be verified before any withdrawal.
  • Money you deposit returns to the method you paid with. Profits above that can go elsewhere.
  • Keep enough free margin. You can't withdraw money that's supporting open positions.

Our XM withdrawal guide walks through the process and timing.

Three sensible starting budgets

BudgetWhat it lets you doAccountMax risk per trade (1%)
$5–$20Test deposit and withdrawal, place one micro trade to see live executionUltra LowNot meaningful; treat as a test, not trading
$100–$300Trade majors and gold at 0.01 lots with real stopsUltra Low$1–$3
$1,000+Trade 0.05–0.10 lots with 30–50-pip stops; room for two or three positionsUltra Low$10+

If you plan to trade gold, budget toward the higher end. Even 0.01 lots of gold moves $1 for every $1 change in the gold price, so a normal $10–$15 intraday swing is $10–$15 on the smallest position.

Common mistakes

  • Depositing the minimum and using maximum leverage to "grow it". With $5 and 1:1000, a few large lots can wipe out the account within minutes.
  • Wiring small amounts. Use a card, e-wallet or local method under $200.
  • Funding in a different currency from the account. Converting each way costs money. Pick a base currency you can fund in directly where XM offers it.
  • Forgetting the inactivity fee. Independent reviews report a $10 monthly fee after 90 days of inactivity on XM accounts. A forgotten $5 account will be emptied by it.

What we'd do

Deposit an amount you are fully prepared to lose. For most beginners that means $100–$300 into an Ultra Low account, after a couple of weeks on the XM demo. Make a small withdrawal in the first week to check the process works for your country. Before funding, confirm which XM company you're with on is XM legit, and see the XM review for the rest.

Frequently asked questions

What is XM's minimum deposit?

On XM's global site the minimum deposit is $5 for the Standard and Ultra Low accounts and $10,000 for the Shares account. XM quotes these in USD and applies the equivalent for other deposit currencies. Other XM entities may set different minimums, which appear on your registration form.

Can I really trade with $5 on XM?

You can open a 0.01-lot trade because the margin needed is very small, but you can't follow a sensible risk plan. One per cent of $5 is five cents, which is less than the spread. A $5 deposit is best used to test deposits, withdrawals and live execution.

How much should I deposit on XM as a beginner?

We suggest $100–$300 into an Ultra Low account after practising on a demo, and only money you can afford to lose. That allows 0.01-lot trades with 10–30-pip stops while risking around 1% per trade, which is enough to test a strategy properly.

Is the XM minimum deposit different by payment method?

The $5 is the account floor, but methods can have their own minimums shown in the Members Area. International wires are the main exception in practice: XM doesn't cover wire fees under $200, and bank charges can take a large share of a small transfer.

Does XM charge an inactivity fee?

Independent reviews from BrokerChooser and FXEmpire report a $10 monthly fee on accounts inactive for 90 days. We could not see it on XM's public pages, so check your account terms. A small idle balance can be used up by this fee.
